Sonic Drive-In has been one of the most popular fast food chains for decades, and their unique format has stood the test of time.

The Healthiest Sonic Drive-In Menu Items
Before diving into the full menu breakdown, let’s highlight some of the best options for various dietary goals. Remember, “healthy” means something different to everyone, so I’ve categorized these based on different nutritional priorities.
Lowest Calorie Meal Options at Sonic

- Corn Dog: 230 Calories, 13g Fat (4g Saturated), 23g Carbs, 6g Protein, 480mg Sodium
- Small Chicken Bites: 240 Calories, 12g Fat (2g Saturated), 19g Carbs, 13g Protein, 900mg Sodium
- Jr. Bacon, Egg, & Cheese Burrito: 270 Calories, 14g Fat (6g Saturated), 22g Carbs, 13g Protein, 870mg Sodium
- Bacon Ranch Queso Wrap: 340 Calories, 18g Fat (7g Saturated), 28g Carbs, 16g Protein, 1030mg Sodium
If you’re watching your calories but still want a satisfying meal, these options are your best bet.
The Corn Dog is surprisingly low-calorie for a fast food option due to its small size, while the Small Chicken Bites give you a decent protein boost for not many calories.
Highest Protein Options at Sonic

- SuperSONIC Bacon Double Cheeseburger: 1130 Calories, 75g Fat (22g Saturated), 54g Carbs, 57g Protein, 2000mg Sodium
- Triple SONIC Smasher: 780 Calories, 51g Fat (20g Saturated), 31g Carbs, 48g Protein, 2070mg Sodium

- 5 Piece Tenders: 530 Calories, 27g Fat (3g Saturated), 37g Carbs, 36g Protein, 1490mg Sodium
Looking to maximize protein? The SuperSONIC Bacon Double Cheeseburger is your “best” option with a whopping 57g of protein, but I wouldn’t exactly call it a good protein source with over 1,100 calories.
If you want something a bit more reasonable, the 5 Piece Tenders offer 36g of protein with around 500 calories, making it a much better protein source.
Most Macro-Balanced Options at Sonic

- Bacon Breakfast Burrito: 470 Calories, 25g Fat (11g Saturated), 35g Carbs, 25g Protein, 1540mg Sodium
- Crispy Chicken Sandwich: 520 Calories, 24g Fat (4.5g Saturated), 52g Carbs, 24g Protein, 1470mg Sodium
- Bacon Breakfast Toaster: 470 Calories, 24g Fat (10g Saturated), 42g Carbs, 22g Protein, 1940mg Sodium
For those looking for a balance between protein, carbs, and fats, these options provide a good middle ground.
The Bacon Breakfast Burrito gives you a nice 25g of protein with moderate carbs and fats, making it a well-rounded breakfast option.
Lowest Carb Options at Sonic
*I’m just listing menu items as-is, but you can go the keto route and order unique items, such as a burger without a bun or a breakfast burrito without a tortilla.
- Small Chicken Bites: 240 Calories, 12g Fat (2g Saturated), 19g Carbs, 13g Protein, 900mg Sodium
- Corn Dog: 230 Calories, 13g Fat (4g Saturated), 23g Carbs, 6g Protein, 480mg Sodium
- Bacon Ranch Queso Wrap: 340 Calories, 18g Fat (7g Saturated), 28g Carbs, 16g Protein, 1030mg Sodium
If you’re trying to keep your carbs in check, your options at Sonic are somewhat limited.
The Small Chicken Bites offer the best protein-to-carb ratio among the lower-carb choices. Unfortunately, Sonic doesn’t offer bunless burger options by default like some other chains, but you can always ask to have your burger without the bun.
Burger & Hot Dog Nutrition at Sonic
Sonic’s burgers range from classic cheeseburgers to loaded specialty options. Let’s explore the nutrition facts:

The Jr. Cheeseburger is your basic low-calorie option at 370 calories with 19g of fat, 34g of carbs, and 16g of protein. It’s a solid choice if you want the burger experience without going overboard on calories.
Moving up in size, the Plain Cheeseburger contains 630 calories, 35g fat, 48g carbs, and 30g protein. This is where you start getting a more substantial protein amount, but the calories come with it.
For the truly hungry, the SuperSONIC Double Cheeseburger packs 1070 calories with 70g fat, 54g carbs, and 53g protein. And if you want to really go all out, the SuperSONIC Bacon Double Cheeseburger tops the charts at 1130 calories, 75g fat, 54g carbs, and 57g protein.
What surprised me is that Sonic’s burgers actually offer pretty impressive protein compared to some other fast food chains. The trade-off is that they also tend to be higher in fat.

For hot dog lovers, Sonic offers a few options:
- All-American Dog: 410 Calories, 21g Fat, 42g Carbs, 13g Protein, 1150mg Sodium
- Chili Cheese Coney: 470 Calories, 29g Fat, 34g Carbs, 18g Protein, 1200mg Sodium
- Footlong Quarter Pound Coney: 770 Calories, 48g Fat, 54g Carbs, 31g Protein, 2160mg Sodium
The Corn Dog, as mentioned earlier, is surprisingly one of the lowest calorie options on the entire menu at just 230 calories.
Chicken & Wrap Nutrition at Sonic
Sonic offers plenty of chicken options, from nugget-style bites to sandwiches and wraps:

The Small Chicken Bites contain 240 calories, 12g fat, 19g carbs, and 13g protein. If you’re looking for more protein, you can size up to Medium Chicken Bites (350 calories, 19g protein) or Large Chicken Bites (510 calories, 27g protein).
The Crispy Chicken Sandwich is a solid middle-ground option with 520 calories, 24g fat, 52g carbs, and 24g protein. It actually has a pretty balanced macro profile compared to many other items on the menu.
When it comes to wraps, Sonic offers some interesting choices:
- Bacon Ranch Queso Wrap: 340 Calories, 18g Fat, 28g Carbs, 16g Protein, 1030mg Sodium
- Southwest Crunch Queso Wrap: 360 Calories, 19g Fat, 32g Carbs, 14g Protein, 1010mg Sodium
- FRITOS Chili Cheese Jr. Wrap: 380 Calories, 20g Fat, 39g Carbs, 10g Protein, 850mg Sodium
- FRITOS Chili Cheese Wrap: 650 Calories, 35g Fat, 62g Carbs, 19g Protein, 1500mg Sodium
These wraps can be a good option if you’re looking for something a bit different than the standard burger or sandwich, but they are lacking in protein compared to the chicken sandwiches.
Breakfast Nutrition at Sonic
Breakfast at Sonic offers a pretty wide variety, although they all mainly revolve around eggs and breakfast meats:

The Jr. Bacon, Egg, & Cheese Burrito is the lowest calorie breakfast option at 270 calories with 14g fat, 22g carbs, and 13g protein. Its sibling, the Jr. Sausage, Egg, & Cheese Burrito, is slightly higher at 280 calories.
For a more substantial breakfast, the Bacon, Egg, & Cheese Brioche Sandwich contains 440 calories, 23g fat, 38g carbs, and 20g protein. It’s worth noting that this particular sandwich may not be available at every location, though.
The highest calorie breakfast option is the Ultimate Meat & Cheese Burrito at 820 calories, which definitely grants it the “ultimate” title.
Side Item Nutrition at Sonic
No fast food meal is complete without sides, and Sonic has plenty to choose from:

The Groovy Fries range from 260 calories for a small to 510 calories for a large. If you add cheese, those numbers jump to 330 calories for a small and 650 for a large. The Chili Cheese Groovy Fries go even higher, with a large containing 760 calories.
With a large side of chili cheese fries, the odds are you are splitting it with others. If not, you definitely want to be mindful of the fat and sodium content.
If you prefer tots over fries, the regular Tots range from 250 calories (small) to 580 calories (large). Like the fries, you can get them with cheese or chili cheese, which adds more calories.
For something different, Sonic offers Mozzarella Sticks (370 calories for small, 750 for large), Onion Rings (440 calories for small, 800 for large), and Ched ‘R’ Peppers (280 calories for small, 550 for large).
A unique side option is Pickle Fries, which are Sonic’s version of fried pickles. Since pickles are virtually calorie-free, these are lower in calories overall, with only 170 calories for a small side.
Sonic Frozen Desserts Nutrition
This is where Sonic truly shines- Sonic’s frozen treats are legendary:

There are other flavor variations that aren’t listed in the above graphic, but they were only left off to keep things concise.
Most flavors and variations will be nutritionally similar, with slight differences between flavors. If there’s a specific flavor you don’t see listed here, you can find it on Sonic’s website.
The Master Shakes (specialty flavors) are higher in calories than the classic shakes. For example, a large Oreo Peanut Butter Shake contains a whopping 1480 calories with 73g fat and 190g carbs.
As a dessert, that’s quite substantial. But as a meal… yeah, it’s also substantial.
For something a bit lighter, the Vanilla Cup is just 300 calories, which is a great option if you just want something sweet. It’s a bit higher in calories than the vanilla ice cream you’ll find at McDonald’s or Burger King, but still a decent option.
The Truth About Sonic’s Sugar-Free Slushes

Sonic is famous for their slushes, but there’s something important you should know: even if you order a sugar-free flavor, it isn’t exactly sugar-free.
A plain slush (with no flavor syrup) ranges from 120 calories for a Wacky Pack (kids) size to 540 calories for a Route 44 (the largest) size.
Even without any added flavoring, these slushes contain between 32g and 145g (yes, you read that right) of sugar! That’s because the slush base itself is primarily sugar.
When you add flavor syrups on top of that, it adds even more calories and sugar. For example, adding Cherry flavor to a large adds 90 calories and 25 grams of sugar.
Sonic does offer sugar-free flavor add-ins, which can help reduce the added calories from the syrups. For example, the Blackberry Sugar-Free Add-In adds only 5 calories to a Medium slush, instead of the 25-60 calories other flavor add-ins might add.
However, it’s very important to understand that even with sugar-free flavor add-ins, the slush itself still contains a pretty substantial amount of sugar. The “sugar-free” only refers to the flavoring, not the entire drink.
If you’re watching your sugar intake but still want that Sonic slush experience, consider getting the smallest size possible and adding a sugar-free flavor option, but keep in mind that the entire drink is not sugar-free.
Sodium Content at Sonic
While I typically focus on calories and macros, it’s worth noting that fast food tends to be high in sodium, and Sonic is no exception.
Most of their menu items contain a significant amount of sodium, which is something to be aware of if you’re monitoring your intake.
Lowest Sodium Options at Sonic
- Corn Dog: 480mg Sodium
- Plain Slush (No Syrup): 20mg – 85mg Sodium
- Cold Brew: 150mg Sodium
- Small Onion Rings: 430mg Sodium (the onion rings are the side with the lowest sodium overall)
Highest Sodium Options at Sonic
- Ultimate Meat & Cheese Burrito: 2190mg Sodium
- Triple SONIC Smasher: 2070mg Sodium
- Garlic Butter Bacon Cheeseburger: 2060mg Sodium
- SuperSONIC Bacon Double Cheeseburger: 2000mg Sodium
- Large Chili Cheese Tots: 2420mg Sodium
For reference, the American Heart Association recommends no more than 2,300mg of sodium per day, with an ideal limit of 1,500mg for most adults. This is obviously very subjective based on the individual, and an active young-adult can handle larger amounts of sodium without an issue, but it’s worth noting.
But as you can see, a single menu item at Sonic can easily exceed the recommended daily limit, so if you’re watching your sodium, you need to be mindful.
Calorie-Saving Tips at Sonic

Here are a few tips to help you save calories at Sonic while still enjoying your meal:
- Skip the cheese: Removing cheese from your burger or sandwich can save you 70 calories and 6 grams of fat.
- Go for junior sizes: The Jr. burgers and wraps are significantly lower in calories than their full-sized counterparts, although a less filling meal.
- Watch your sides: A small order of regular tots will save you 330 calories compared to a medium side of onion rings. The side you choose can make a big difference!
- Be mindful of shakes and slushes: These can add hundreds or even a thousand calories to your meal. Consider sharing, getting a smaller size, or saving them for an occasional treat.
- Condiments make a difference: Mayo will add 50 calories to a sandwich, compared to under 10 from mustard. But the real difference makers are the sauce packets- ranch or honey mustard will set you back nearly 100 calories, but something like groovy sauce, buffalo sauce, or ketchup, will be virtually calorie-free.
Conclusion: Is Sonic Healthy?

Like any fast food restaurant, whether Sonic is “healthy” depends entirely on what you order and how it fits into your overall diet.
Sonic offers options for a variety of goals, such as high-protein or macro-focused diets. But I will admit that they fall short in a few areas:
- Unlike Wendy’s, Sonic does not offer salads, which is a huge missing piece if you want to eat a filling, lower-calorie meal.
- Sonic doesn’t offer grilled chicken, so you are limited only to fried chicken options.
- If eating low-carb is the goal, your options are quite limited.
Remember, no single meal defines your diet. So, even if Sonic doesn’t have the best options for your diet, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it.
If you’re craving a SuperSONIC Bacon Double Cheeseburger with a large Oreo Peanut Butter Shake, I’m not here to stop you.
And if you are trying to find more balanced options, now you have the information to make those choices at Sonic!.
