Regular French toast is delicious, but when you pair thick bread with a rich French toast mixture and syrup, it’s not exactly the most “macro-friendly” option. And turning French toast into a decadent chocolate dish? That’s going to lead to a ton of calories.

But fear not, this chocolate protein French toast is here to completely change the game.

The entire recipe, chocolate sauce included, contains just 465 calories and packs in an impressive 39 grams of protein! Plus, it tastes just like a rich, decadent dessert.

How to Make Chocolate Protein French Toast

Let’s break this down step by step with everything you’ll need for chocolate French toast perfection.

First, let’s talk about my bread choice for this one. I’m using Sara Lee Delightful bread here, which admittedly is a bit different from your typical French toast.

While most recipes call for thick-cut bread, these thinner slices actually work perfectly for this recipe. At just 45 calories per slice, they help keep the calories low while still soaking up our chocolate mixture beautifully.

The chocolate French toast mixture is where the magic happens. We’re combining egg, milk, and sugar-free syrup as our base, then adding chocolate protein powder and cocoa powder to create a rich chocolate batter. When you mix it up, you want a consistency that’s thick enough to coat the bread but still liquid enough to dip.

Speaking of dipping – this is where a lot of people go wrong with French toast. You want to give each slice a dip on both sides, letting it sit in the mixture long enough to soak it up. The bread should absorb some of the mixture but still maintain its structure. If you let it soak too long, you’ll end up with soggy French toast, but if you just give it a quick dip, the interior will be regular ol’ bread.

Once your bread is dipped, it goes straight onto a medium-heat pan. You’ll see the edges start to set after about a minute or two, and that’s when you know it’s almost ready to flip. Each side needs about 2 minutes to achieve that perfect golden-brown finish, but the time may vary slightly if you use a different type of bread.

Once the French toast is cooked, we’re creating a protein-packed chocolate sauce that’s going to take this French toast to the next level.

By combining more chocolate protein powder with milk, cocoa powder, and sugar-free syrup, we get a pourable sauce that adds a ton of chocolatey flavor and of course, extra protein.

When the sauce hits the warm French toast, it creates this beautiful glossy coating that makes the whole dish look and taste like it came from a fancy brunch spot.

A sprinkle of chopped chocolate is optional, but it adds a gorgeous finishing touch and extra chocolate flavor that nobody is going to complain about.

This recipe actually creates quite a lot of chocolate sauce, so you may even have some leftover on the side for dipping. But hey, there’s no such thing as too much chocolate, right?

It’s worth noting that I use PEScience Chocolate Truffle protein powder in both the French toast and the sauce because it has this perfect balance of chocolate flavor. PEScience is a blend of whey & casein protein powder, and it’s the only type I have tested in this recipe.

That being said, since it isn’t a huge amount of protein powder, using another type should work. Just be sure you like the taste of your protein powder, because it’s the star of this dish.

Instructions

  1. Heat up a pan over medium heat.
  2. In a wide bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, and syrup until combined.
  3. Add the protein powder and cocoa powder and mix until you have a thick liquid mixture with no dry powder left.
  4. Dip each slice of bread into the chocolate French toast mixture and flip to coat both sides before adding to your hot pan (I end up doing 2 batches to leave enough room to flip the bread in the pan).
  5. Let the bread cook for about 2 minutes, then flip and cook the other side. The exact time will vary based on the thickness of your bread and the heat of your pan, but around 2 minutes should work in most cases.
  6. Remove the French toast from the pan and add to a plate. While it cools, whisk together all of the ingredients for your protein chocolate sauce.
  7. Pour the chocolate sauce over the top of the chocolate French toast and enjoy!

  • You can use a low-carb bread to transform this into a keto French toast dish!
  • The calories and macros you see here are based on the exact ingredients I used. The bread (Sara Lee in this case) and milk (Fairlife for me) you use will alter the nutrition facts a bit.
  • I used PEScience protein powder for this recipe, which is a blend of whey & casein protein. You should be able to swap the protein powder for a different type in this recipe since it isn’t a huge amount.
