For all the chocolate and peanut butter lovers out there, I’ve got the perfect recipe for you. Not only is it delicious, but it’s packed with a ton of protein, requires only a handful of simple ingredients, and takes just minutes to throw together.

This creamy homemade protein chocolate peanut butter spread combines two of the world’s best flavors into one delicious, protein-packed spread.

Regular chocolate spreads like Nutella are undeniably tasty, but they often come with quite a lot of calories and sugar. This high-protein chocolate peanut butter spread changes the game entirely.

Two tablespoons of this protein spread contain just 80 calories and pack in 8 grams of protein. That means that you can have twice as much spread as typical peanut butter for the same amount of calories and double the protein!

This recipe is a variation of my original Protein Peanut Butter, but taken to a new level with the addition of chocolate.

Chocolate peanut butter is perfect for a quick breakfast, a post-workout snack, or for those late-night chocolatey cravings.

 

How to Make Protein Chocolate Peanut Butter

Creating this chocolate peanut butter spread is surprisingly simple.

You’ll need chocolate whey/casein protein powder, powdered peanut butter, a touch of sugar substitute (or regular sugar if you prefer since it is a very small amount), unsweetened cocoa powder, creamy peanut butter, and water.

The key to this recipe’s success lies in the ingredients. Since this recipe is as simple as “mix everything together,” it’s important to use the right ingredients.

The blend of whey and casein protein powder creates an ideal texture, and I find it far superior to whey protein powder alone. For the chocolate taste in this one, we’re using chocolate protein powder combined with some additional cocoa powder to really bring out the flavor.

Of course, we’re also using peanut butter in this recipe. It may be tempting to substitute peanut butter to save calories, but you do not want to do that. Not only does the peanut butter base help us achieve a creamy base, but it also gives us the best flavor.

To make this spread, all you have to do is throw everything into a large bowl and mix! Most recipes require mixing the dry and liquid ingredients separately, but we’re mixing it all together in this one.

If you want to make your life even easier, you can even use a blender to mix everything together and achieve an ultra-smooth consistency.

The hardest part of this recipe is deciding how you want to enjoy it.

Spread it on whole-grain toast for a protein-packed breakfast, use it as a dip for apple slices or graham crackers, or add a spoonful to your protein oatmeal or overnight oats for an even larger protein boost.

My personal favorite? Combining it with Protein Peanut Butter to make chocolate peanut butter sandwiches.

Chocolate peanut butter is also surprisingly good in smoothies. Try blending it with a frozen banana and some milk for an explosion of flavor. You can adjust the liquid to make the smoothy ultra-thick, similar to ice cream, for an amazing protein nightcap.

 

Customizing Your Chocolate Peanut Butter Spread

One of the best things about making your own spread is the ability to customize it to your liking. If you prefer a thicker consistency, simply use less water when blending or mixing. For a creamier, more spreadable texture, add a bit more water.

Prefer a richer and deeper chocolate flavor? Simply add more cocoa powder for a rich dark chocolate flavor.

This spread doesn’t require refrigeration, making it perfect for quick, on-the-go snacks. Store it in an airtight container at room temperature for a silky smooth, easily spreadable consistency.

If you prefer a firmer texture, you can keep it in the refrigerator. This will thicken the spread slightly, making it perfect for those who like their peanut butter with a bit more substance.

I’ve tried it both ways, but I always prefer my spreads to be a little bit runny and gooey. But, to each their own!

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients to a large bowl and mix until completely smooth. A high-speed blender can also be used for an ultra-smooth consistency.
  2. Transfer to a jar or other airtight container to enjoy throughout the week.
  3. For creamier & looser peanut butter, leave the container out at room temperature. For a thicker spread, store it in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • I use PEScience as my protein powder, which is a blend of whey & casein protein. I have found this combination to work the best for a spreadable consistency. Other types of protein powder will work, but the amount of water may need to be adjusted.
  • The flavor of protein powder I use has a great chocolate taste, so not a ton of cocoa powder is needed. If you prefer a darker or richer chocolate, you can use 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder, you may just need to add a little extra sweetener.
  • You can use Nutella in place of peanut butter in this recipe if you want a high-protein Nutella spread. The protein will be bumped down a bit and the sugar content will be higher, but there is no denying that it will be delicious.
