Air fryer steak is an easy way to get steak on the table, even during the work week!

Hands-off cooking is ideal when you’re busy or trying to multi-task in the kitchen, and that’s exactly why I adore my air fryer. That, and because I don’t have to turn on the oven. My air fryer scallops and air fryer chicken thighs are two of my go-to’s for that very reason.

Recipe features

  • The recipe itself only requires 3 ingredients.
  • Easily tailor the recipe based on how you like your steak to be cooked.
  • The steak is delicious on its own and can easily be paired with many different side dishes.
  • Crispy on the outside but perfectly juice inside, this may just be the fastest way to get steak on the table.

Ingredients

Striploin steak – I used two striploin steaks about 1″ thick each. If you don’t want to use striploin, sirloin steak or ribeye steak are other great options, just make sure they’re about the same thickness.

Garlic powder – Garlic powder, along with salt and black pepper, are what give the steak its flavor. Sometimes, simple is best!

Olive oil – Helps the steak to brown in the air fryer, and makes it so you don’t have to spray your air fryer basket with nonstick spray.

Instructions

Step 1: Bring to room temperature. Remove the steaks from the fridge, place them on a plate and allow them to come to room temperature (or close to it) for 20-30 minutes before using. This allows the steak to cook more evenly.

Step 2: Season the steak. Dry the steaks with a paper towel to remove excess moisture. Sprinkle the steaks with garlic powder, salt and pepper on both sides. Brush the olive oil all over the steaks.

Step 3: Air fry. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F. Place the steaks inside the basket and air fry at 400°F for 12 minutes, flipping halfway through. Allow the steak to sit on a cutting board for a few minutes before slicing. Enjoy! NOTE: see recipe card below for various cook times based on how you might like your steak

Tips and FAQs

  • Don’t overcrowd the air fryer. If you’re cooking more than 2 steaks, make sure to cook them in batches.
  • Always use a meat thermometer to confirm the internal temperature of steak.

Tip

Be sure to remove them about 5°F before your ideal cook time, since the steaks will continue cooking as they rest.

How long should do steaks take to air fry?

Cook times vary depending on size of steak, and the steak will continue cooking for a few minutes once it rests. Here are the approximate cook times for 1″ thick steaks:

Rare: 125°F, and cook time is 8 minutes

Medium-rare: 135°F, and cook time is 10 minutes

Medium: 145°F, and cook time is 12 minutes

Medium-well: 155°F, and cook time is 12-13 minutes

Well done: 160°F+, and cook time is 14 minutes

What pairs well with steak?

Serve steak alongside mashed potatoes, braised greens, sautéed asparagus, or simply sprinkle it with some chopped fresh parsley.

Or, prep the steak and use it on top of salad, on tacos or on a sandwich!

Storage

Refrigerator: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Freezer: Wait for steak to cool, then wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and place into a freezer-safe bag. Freeze for up to 3 months.

Reheating: To reheat, thaw steak in the refrigerator overnight. Reheat in the oven at 300°F until warm. If the steak has already been sliced, reheat in the microwave.
