I’ve had a protein Oreo protein waffle recipe on my blog for years, but it was time for a serious upgrade.

I remember liking the original recipe at the time (which is now 5 years ago), but I have evolved quite a bit since then, so we need to change some things.

The original recipe (pictured above) was a Belgian waffle recipe from scratch, but when I made the recipe again after 5 long years, the waffle tasted way too dry for my liking. Maybe my standards have changed, but I knew I could do better.

Instead of a Belgian waffle with a sad excuse for an Oreo cream drizzle, we’re leveling up: enter Protein Oreo Waffle Sandwiches.

Instead of prepping everything completely from scratch, we’re utilizing my Dark Chocolate Protein Waffle Mix that I created with PEScience. This “just add water” mix is a game-changer for quick, crispy waffles that actually taste good.

By starting with this chocolate base and adding black cocoa powder plus crushed Oreo cookies, we get very close to that authentic Oreo cookie flavor. Pair that with a protein-packed Oreo cream filling, and you’ve got yourself breakfast that tastes like dessert.

Each waffle sandwich contains 250 calories and 19 grams of protein. Not bad for what essentially amounts to eating Oreo cookies for breakfast!

The Secret to Oreo Flavor

Black cocoa powder

The key to nailing the Oreo flavor is black cocoa powder. Regular cocoa powder won’t cut it here, you need that deep, almost bitter chocolate flavor that makes Oreos so distinctive.

Black cocoa powder can be a bit drying when added to chocolate recipes, which is why these waffles are designed to be paired with the cream filling. On their own, they might seem slightly dry, but that’s intentional.

Just think about Oreo cookies- they’re nothing without the cream filling.

We’re also adding some crushed Oreo Thins to add texture and extra Oreo flavor throughout the waffles. I use Oreo Thins because I find the ratio to be a bit better, but truly any Oreo cookies will work just fine.

If you’re trying to save calories, you can skip the crushed cookies entirely. The black cocoa powder does most of the heavy lifting for the Oreo flavor anyway.

Making the Protein Cream Filling

The cream filling is what really makes these waffle sandwiches special. It’s essentially a protein-packed version of the cream inside an Oreo cookie.

I use light butter spread, vanilla protein powder, powdered sugar substitute, and a little bit of milk. The result is a smooth, creamy filling that you wouldn’t even know was packed with protein.

The key is letting the cream filling chill in the fridge while you make the waffles. This helps it thicken to the perfect consistency for spreading or dipping.

You can use this cream filling three ways: as a sandwich filling between two waffles, drizzled over the top of a stack, or served on the side as a dip.

Waffle Making Tips

Since this recipe uses my protein waffle mix, the process is incredibly simple. Just add water, mix, and pour into your waffle maker.

The batter will thicken slightly as it sits, which is normal. This actually helps create better texture in the finished waffles.

If you’re making mini waffles, here’s a crucial tip: throw them in the toaster for a couple minutes after they come out of the mini waffle maker. Mini waffles get soggy much faster than Belgian waffles, and this quick toasting step gives them the perfect crisp.

For Belgian waffles, this extra step usually isn’t necessary since they tend to hold their crispness better.

This recipe is pretty flexible depending on your goals and preferences. If you want to cut calories, you can skip the crushed Oreos and just enjoy a stack of three mini chocolate waffles for 250 calories.

You can also skip the cream filling entirely if you prefer. The waffles have enough Oreo flavor to stand on their own, especially if you’re serving them with something else like fresh berries or a drizzle of sugar-free syrup.

If you don’t have access to my protein waffle mix, you can try this with other “just add water” waffle mixes, though the results might vary. Most waffle mixes require eggs and oil, which will change the macros and preparation.

More Oreo-Inspired Protein Recipes

Since Oreos are one of my favorite snacks on the planet, they serve as the inspiration for a lot of my recipes. If you want to eat Oreos while also hitting your protein goals, here are some options for you:

Ingredients

Ingredients for Waffles (makes 6 mini waffles or 2 Belgian waffles)

Protein Cream Filling (enough to make 3 waffle sandwiches)

  • 28g (2 Tbsp) Light Butter Spread (Country Crock)
  • 31g (1 Scoop) Vanilla Whey/Casein Blend Protein Powder
  • 15g Powdered Sugar Substitute
  • 1 Tbsp Milk of Choice

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix your protein waffle mix, black cocoa powder, sugar, and a dash of salt. 
  2. Add water to the bowl while stirring until you have a thick but pourable batter. Once fully mixed, fold in your crushed Oreo cookies.
  3. While the batter rests (it will thicken slightly as it sits) make the Oreo cream filling by mixing together light butter, protein powder, powdered sugar, and milk in a small bowl until smooth. Add the Oreo cream to the fridge to thicken slightly.
  4. Plug in your waffle maker and allow it to heat up, which should only take a few minutes.
  5. Spoon the waffle batter into the center of the waffle maker, leaving a small amount of room around the edges for the waffle to expand. You should have enough batter for 6 mini waffles or 2 Belgian waffles.
  6. Mini waffle tip: Mini waffles don’t hold their crisp nearly as well as Belgian waffles do and they tend to get soggy quickly. Before plating my mini waffles I like to throw them into the toaster for a couple quick minutes to crisp them up- it makes a world of difference.
  7. Once the waffles are done, use your Oreo cream filling to create waffle sandwiches, drizzle the cream frosting over the top of your waffles, or serve on the side as a dip.

Notes

Any waffle mix will work, but very few are true “just add water” mixes when it comes to waffles. I formulated this protein waffle mix to be perfectly crispy every time!

Adding additional cocoa mix to any chocolate-based product can dry it out quickly. On their own, these waffles might seem a little dry, but that is why we’re pairing them with an Oreo cream.

Calorie-saving tips:

  • Leave the crushed Oreos out to save some calories and sugar
  • Leave the cream filling out and enjoy this as a stack of mini waffles. 3 mini waffles on their own come to 250 calories.
