These Air Fryer Apple Chips have come to my rescue on more than one occasion.

Too many apples in my fridge? Apple chips. Need a break from my usual slice of apple coffee cake or scoop of apple crisp for dessert? Apple chips. They’re such a simple yet sweet, tart, and crispy snack that always hits the spot!

What’s better is how incredibly easy it is to make homemade apple chips in the air fryer. After slicing the apples into thin rounds, they’re tossed in cinnamon sugar and cooked in the air fryer for about 10 minutes. What’s left is a basket full of golden and crispy fruit chips to eat by the handful, dunk into sweet dips, or lay on a snacking board.

Recipe features

  • A light, crispy, and fall-flavored snack or dessert that’s cheaper than a bag of store-bought apple chips.
  • Like all of my air fryer recipes, the air fryer does most of the work!
  • They’re tart, sweet, and perfectly crisp without needing much oil.
  • Incredibly easy to make with only 4 simple ingredients!

Ingredients

Apples – Firm and crisp apples with a sweet-tart flavor are best, like Pink Lady, Fuji, Gala, or Honeycrisp. Softer apples, like McIntosh apples, will take longer to cook and won’t be as crispy because of their water content.

Cinnamon sugar – Combining ground cinnamon with granulated sugar and a pinch of salt creates a warm and sweet coating for the apple chips. Use any granulated sugar you have on hand here—white sugar, brown sugar, cane sugar, or coconut sugar all work well!

Instructions

Step 1: Slice. Wash and dry the apples before slicing them into thin slices. Transfer the slices to a large bowl.

Step 2: Toss in cinnamon sugar. Sprinkle the sugar, cinnamon, and salt over top of the apples and toss until they’re evenly coated.

Step 3: Air fry. Transfer the apple slices to the air fryer basket, spray the tops with nonstick spray, and air fry until they’re crispy.

Tips and FAQs

  • For the most even, paper-thin apple slices, carefully slice the apples with a mandolin slicer. A sharp chef’s knife also works well but it’s harder to get consistent ⅛-inch slices.
  • Don’t walk too far away from the air fryer! It helps to open the air fryer basket every couple of minutes to check and see if the chips are browning.
  • For extra crispy apple chips, let them cool for 10 to 15 minutes after air frying. This gives them time to dry out a little more to give them a bigger crunch factor!

Tip

You can overlap the apple slices in the air fryer basket. Just shake the basket every 2 to 3 minutes to help them all cook evenly.

Variations

  • Oil-free apple chips – You can skip the nonstick spray for an oil-free variation. Just keep a closer eye on them in the air fryer, as they’re more likely to burn this way.
  • Less sweet – Reduce the sugar to ½ teaspoon or omit it completely for a sugar-free snack.
  • More warm spices – Customize the cinnamon sugar mixture with an additional pinch of nutmeg or cardamom for more warmth. Or, replace the cinnamon with an equal amount of pumpkin pie spice or gingerbread spice.
  • No cinnamon – Ditch the cinnamon if you’re not a fan!

Serving suggestions

Dig into your freshly baked cinnamon apple chips right out of the air fryer basket—I won’t judge! Or, if you can resist for long enough, transfer them to a serving tray or a snacking board and enjoy with cheese, deli meats, fresh fruits and veggies, and sweet or savory spreads on the side.

You can also serve apple chips with chocolate hummus for dipping, on top of a bowl of oatmeal or granola, or on the side of an apple smoothie

Should I peel the apples?

I like to keep the apple peels on for a mouthwatering pop of color but you can peel them if you’d like.

What temperature should you air fry apple chips at?

I found 375ºF to be the sweet spot when cooking apple chips in the air fryer. This temperature is low enough to help the apple slices almost dehydrate and cook quickly without burning.

I don’t have an air fryer. Can I bake the apple chips?

Sure! Lay the cinnamon sugar apple slices on a parchment-lined baking sheet before baking them in a 200ºF oven for 1 hour. Flip the chips and continue baking for 1 to 1 ½ hours or until they’re crispy and almost golden brown. Turn off the oven and let the apples sit in the oven for 1 hour to cool and crisp up before serving.

Storage

Room temperature: The apple chips lose their crispiness pretty quickly, which is why I recommend eating the freshly cooked batch right away or within a few days. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container or ziplock bag on the kitchen counter for 2 to 3 days.
